Philosophy of Integral Coaching

The coaching way of being rests firmly on shoulders of several philosophers. Integral coaching employs an integral methodological pluralism. This is really just a fancy way of saying that integral coaching, by nature, rigorously includes all evidence of truth - personal, social, biological, environmental, etc. - to expand both the client's and coach's self-understanding in a way that opens new possibilities for action. The following resources are challenging but rewarding reading. Especially recommended for coaches.

cover "Heidegger: An Introduction"
by Richard Polt

Probably the best overview and introduction to Heidegger's key concepts.

"Husserl: An Analysis of His Phenomenology"
by Paul Ricoeur

"An Invitation to Social Construction"
by Kenneth Gergen

Gergen's work forms the foundation for appreciative inquiry. He injects the study of psychology and organizational dynamics with social constructivism. This book is a great and down-to-earth introduction to social construction theory.

cover "Sex, Ecology, Spirituality: The Spirit of Evolution"
by Ken Wilber

Ken's integral theory masterwork (so far). Wilber is a "synthetic philosopher" and leader of the integral wave of philosophy which connects body, mind, soul, and spirit across self, culture, and nature. His integral map of the development of consciousness with four quadrants and developmental lines stands as the foundation of integral coaching. I can say without hesitation that all of his writings are worthwhile reading.

Also see http://www.worldofkenwilber.com and Shambhala's Ken Wilber web site for references to Wilber's other writings and contributions from the global integral community on applications of integral theory.

cover "Michel Foucault: Beyond Structuralism and Hermeneutics"
by Hubert Dreyfus and Paul Rabinow

cover "The Presence of the Past: Morphic Resonance & the Habits of Nature"
by Rupert Sheldrake

"Co-Operative Inquiry: Research into the Human Condition"

by John Heron

cover "The Human Condition"
by Hannah Arendt
