Body

The body is one of the most overlooked and unintegrated enablers of personal effectiveness and fulfillment. Here are some of my favorite books on integrating the body.

cover

"Getting Our Bodies Back: Recovery, Healing, and Transformation through Body-Centered Psychotherapy"
by Christine Caldwell

Caldwell defines addiction as dissociation from the body. Using this definition, we all suffer some form of addiction. This an excellent book on the body's role in transformation and healing.

cover "Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, and Illness"
by Jon Kabat-Zinn

A book on using mindfulness to heal pain, stress, and illness. Chapter 5 describes the famous body-scan technique, a very powerful body awareness practice.

cover "Yoga: The Spirit and Practice of Moving into Stillness"
by Erich Schiffman

Simply one of the best books on Iyengar style hatha yoga available. A great additional support to attending instructor-led yoga classes.

cover "Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength"
by Bill Philips

A book on overall physical health that includes some amazing stories of transformation and a great weightlifting and aerobic workout program.

cover "Retooling on the Run: Real Change for Leaders with No Time"
by Stuart Heller and David Surrenda

"The Anatomy of Change: A Way to MoveThrough Life's Transitions"
by Richard Strozzi Heckler

Heckler is a leader in the field of somatic coaching. His book is filled with key distinctions for working through the body. He discusses how to work with our conditioned tendencies through the natural rhythms of change. Many practices are described and illustrated with stories of transformation.

  "Body-Centered Psychotherapy: The Hakomi Method"
by Ron Kurtz

A wonderful introduction to the practice of body-centered psychotherapy. Recommended reading for coaches.
