Personal History

I was born in York, Pennsylvania, an industrial city on the edge of the eastern megalopolis that runs from Boston to Washington DC. I was a curious child who loved to explore the woods. I loved to draw pictures and "figure things out." I had a knack for taking things apart to understand how they worked.

When I was a teenager, my family moved to Quincy, Illinois, a small Mississippi river town. I was in culture shock and spent the rest of my teenage years trying to find myself.

My college years where spent in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois studying computer science and working for the University of Illinois, the US Army Corps of Engineers and finally Motorola. School was a struggle for me and I wound up following my own interests wherever they took me. I spent time learning computer science by doing my own research as I worked for the university. I discovered later in life that I have a different learning style than that assumed by the standard education system. Discovering my learning style and learning how to work with it changed by life.

I worked for Motorola for four years as a software developer and tester when they transferred me to Tempe, Arizona. While living in Arizona, I feel in love with the desert. It is so full of vitality and life. My last year at Motorola was spent as a member of their Corporate Software Quality Council focusing my energy on improving software development practices. During this time I was an invited speaker on institutionalizing formal inspections and engineering quality fault tolerant systems.

I took a job working for Wind River Systems in the San Francisco bay area where I now live and work. My career at Wind River has changed from quality manager to organizational development manager and internal coach and consultant. I continue to work for Wind River as business for Compassionate Coaching takes off.

Along the way I took up a Zen practice and koan study. This spiritual practice evolved over the last nine years and is now a synthesis of Zen, Siddha Yoga and Diamond Heart. I am active in the integral community, an associate of the Integral Institute, and founder of a global community of about 90 practitioners and theorists of integrally informed leading and organizing called Integral-LOD. Both coaching and leading are spiritual practices for me.
